The Lesson Of The Peacock

$825.00

This ring was my entry into the 2023 Battle Of The Rings competition put on by Danaca Design Studio in Seattle, WA. It was one of 64 of 120 entries chosen to compete and as you may imagine I was thrilled! This piece is one of my greatest accomplishments in my journey as a metalsmith. Hand forged sterling silver with a peacock turquoise kinetic cabochon as the center piece. Each of the 10 side feathers move on rivets. If you’d like to see a video of the movement of this ring please visit my instagram page or send me an email. The movement is one of the best features!

Overall dims - 3-1/2” L x 3” W x 1-1/4 H (including the ring band). Size 8. Band is 1/4” wide and will impact sizing. Please account for 1/4-1/2 size difference smaller. One of a kind. Wooden box included.

To learn more about how the ring was made and the story behind it’s creation please read on.

A large vase of peacock feathers — the train — was the inspiration for this piece and got me thinking of ways to incorporate the complex beauty of these lovely creatures. Confident, graceful and brave became a personal mantra for this piece.

Wanting to use pierced, riveted and kinetic elements, the ideas came flooding in. The design kept changing and became increasingly challenging. Terrified I’d make a wrong decision I was constantly reminding myself that ‘you can do this: be confident, be brave.’ What started as a mantra has since become my lesson.

Sterling silver sheet and wire were pierced, hammered and soldered with rivets used as connections. Each of the 5 train feathers were pierced out and further detailed with bench tools. The 7 show feathers were created by hammering sterling silver nuggets into an antique, bell metal stamp seal and a shot plate.

In addition to movement I wanted an element of sound. Did you know when a male peacock shakes his train feathers it’s called rattling the train? There are 20 tiny pallions of silver under the stone and they rattle inside when the ring is shaken.

To get something you’ve never had you have to do something you’ve never done. This ring is both a statement and a reminder: believe in yourself, be confident and be brave.
